For a while now we've been adding some smartcard technologies to Fedora under the name of the Coolkey project. The most notable addition is smartcard login, which allows you to login to the OS by inserting a smartcard and typing a PIN rather than supplying a name and password. This smartcard login capability is now mandated by people who work in the US Department of Defense (using their CAC smartcard).

We also made PKINIT work with smartcard login, which means once you login using your smartcard, you'll be able to get a Kerberos TGT (Ticket Granting Ticket).

On the Coolkey mailing list (see the Coolkey project page for more info) we've seen some traffic from Gentoo and Debian contributors. They've been packaging Coolkey for use on those distros. Our thanks go do people like David Mueller and Maitland Bottoms who are helping extend Coolkey into the hands of more users!
